There’s no such thing as a perfect budget gaming laptop. All of them make at least one serious compromise to keep prices low. But after spending more than 30 hours testing nine cheap gaming laptops since our previous update, we found that the Lenovo Legion Y520 is the best you can get for around $1,000. It’s one of the least expensive good options, and it keeps cool and quiet during demanding gaming sessions. Plus, the Y520 has a comfortable keyboard, a decent trackpad and screen, and a healthy selection of ports. But it has short battery life—only a few hours—and it’s a bit trickier to upgrade than our other picks.
